Sustainable Forestry Standard

Certification of forests is a new forest manufacturer assurance to consumers that the forest products they sell come from 'green certified' forests that use sustainable forest practices. America's top lumber retailers-plus many homebuilders & paper dealers-have pledged to sell 'certified' label forest products.

Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI)SM program sets high forestry standards for mills, forest owners, and their contractors. Certification programs require forest operator education in sustainable forestry, safety & business.

Sustainable Forestry means to integrate the reforesting, growing, harvesting and procuring trees for useful products-along with the long-term conservation of healthy & renewable forest resources.

Sustainable Forestry Principles - Here in Oregon, the Forest Practices Rules provide the framework to achieve these principles:

  1. Assure sustainable forestry
  2. Manage using responsible practices
  3. Reforest and keep timber growing
  4. Provide for forest health
  5. Maintain soil productivity
  6. Protect water resources
  7. Protect special sites and habitat
  8. Comply with environmental laws
  9. Continually improve forest management

Oregon Professional Logger (OPL) - The OPL program is a voluntary professional standard that accredits harvesting companies for their continuing education in sustainable forestry, safety & business. OPL is an SFI-approved operator training program.
